\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhile silicone breast implants have been around since the 1960s, they\u2019ve experienced little technological evolution in the past three decades until the 2010s.\n\nMeanwhile, women around the world face\u00a0INCREASING NEWS COVERAGE<\/strong>\u00a0of breast implant-related side effects \u2013 most of which have been linked to one particular implant surface \u2013 the macrotextured kind.\n\nBut despite mounting evidence that macrotextured implants potentially trigger inflammatory conditions in patients, leading implant manufacturers\u00a0CONTINUE TO MANUFACTURE, MARKET, AND SELL 4TH AND 5TH GENERATION IMPLANTS<\/strong>\u00a0that haven\u2019t significantly changed since the 1980s.\n\nSuch conditions can range from common, low-risk capsular contracture (which is when the natural tissue capsule formed around an implant hardens and contracts) to a form of cancer known as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL.\n\nIn the face of competitors\u2019 complacency, Establishment Labs has sought to make women\u2019s health the focus that drives how implants are designed and manufactured.\n\nWe\u2019ve teamed up with the best research-focused institutes and universities \u2013 along with the world\u2019s most innovative plastic surgeons \u2013 to diligently investigate an under-researched subject: breast implant surfaces, and the ways our immune systems can respond to them.\n\nOur research on implant technologies began a decade and a half ago in 2004.
